Modern Foreign Languages
They are from the world; therefore they speak as from the world, and the world listens to them (John 4:5).
Intent:
We aim to encourage our pupils to positively gain a genuine interest, curiosity and understanding of the three pillars of learning languages. Therefore, consolidating their ability to express and communicate, becoming inclusive life-long language learners. In addition to enriching our fluent speakers, to become lead learners and deepen their understanding of learning English as an additional language.
Implementation:
Children at St James’ follow the Language Angels French scheme of work to ensure they experience a relevant, broad, vibrant and ambitious foreign language curriculum. All pupils will develop skills in phonics, listening, speaking, reading, writing and grammar through high-quality teaching and cultural exposure. As a whole school, we strive to raise the profile of French and an enthusiasm for language learning. Through acknowledging our achievements in French week assemblies, celebrating French calendar dates, a French extracurricular after-school club, and further new language phrases in workshops.
Below is an outline of the knowledge covered for each year group, where languages are taught, as well as the key skills.
Impact:
All children will learn a new language that will offer our pupils the opportunity to explore relationships between languages, develop a deeper understanding of other cultures, and the world around them, especially through our cross-curricular links. With these transferable skills, they will have a better awareness of self, others and cultural differences, subsequently enriching their cultural capital.
