Our Curriculum

Music and Performing Arts

"Shout for joy to the LORD, all the earth, burst into jubilant song with music;  make music to the LORD with the harp, with the harp and the sound of singing, with trumpets and the blast of the ram's horn - shout for joy before the LORD, the King." (Psalms 98:1-74)

Intent

At St James’ CofE Primary School, we aim for all our pupils to develop a life-long love of music. We want the children in our school to have a wide range of quality musical experiences which engage and inspire them. At the heart of our music curriculum is a drive for creativity, curiosity and zest, where children develop their passion and drive for music. We aim to build a curriculum that encompasses the national curriculum and beyond. The staff of St James believe that every child deserves access to a musical education and the experiences that go alongside this. Therefore, every child in St James will learn how to sing, play an instrument, perform numerous times a year and partake in a wealth of opportunities associated to music.

Implementation

Each week, children partake in a performing arts lesson, where they learn to sing, dance and perform using their voices, bodies and facial expressions. All children at St James learn an instrument – percussion and ocarina at EYFS, recorder at Key Stage 1, and violin at Key Stage 2. They are able to showcase their learning numerous times a year, to parents and carers at our very own bespoke St James' shows and recitals. We are also very lucky to be able to perform throughout the year at various locations across London. At St James', children enjoy participating in a wide variety of workshops, storytelling and musical opportunities. They are able to share their knowledge that is learnt in our music and performing arts lessons during these experiences.

Impact

St James’ pupils will be well-rounded musicians, who are able to express and justify their opinions about music. They can confidently talk about musical concepts, identify these in various genres of music and play these on their instrument. They will be able to perform numerous times a year, showcasing their talents. Those who are deemed as more able are recognised and provided with the right experiences to further their talents. Children at St James understand that music can follow them throughout their education and can be a lifelong career if they chose.
