History

For everything that was written in the past was written to teach us, so that through the endurance taught in the Scriptures and the encouragement they provide we might have hope. (Romans 15:4)

Intent

We aim to deliver an exciting and purposeful History curriculum that is accessible to all children and will help them to gain a wider knowledge and understanding of Britain’s past and that of the wider world. We want to inspire children to explore the past and develop their historical research skills as historians, as well as enable them to cultivate a sense of identity by learning about the past and how it has shaped our world.

Below outlines the knowledge covered for each year group, as well as the key skills, which are taught through these topics.

Implementation

Through high quality planning and cross-curricular teaching, we encourage children to develop their critical thinking skills by being curious and asking questions about the past, investigating and interpreting evidence, discussing perceived ideas and developing their own judgement on cause and effect.

The whole school follows a clear structure of lessons which enables the children to develop their historical skills and build upon prior knowledge: Understanding chronology, Knowledge and Understanding, Investigating and interpreting the past and Communicating historically. Throughout the year, we have various themed days, school trips, workshops and historical experiences to develop a deeper understanding of the time periods studied.

Impact

Children become curious detectives of the past as they develop their research and analytical skills by exploring Britain’s past and that of the wider world. Children will become more knowledgeable on the topics taught and confident in communicating historically using key vocabulary relevant to the historical period. Children will have a better understanding of chronology and placing key events accurately on a timeline. Children will enhance their critical thinking skills and be able to use these skills in other subjects.
